On May 26, 2023, C3S.ai will host its first social determinants of health (SDOH) case competition, “Youth for a Healthier Future: Why Social Care Should be Integrated into Health Care.”

This event will engage students (9th-12th grade) in researching and presenting their insights and strategies for improving the health of their community. The case competition will relate to SDOH with a specific theme to be shared closer to the event.
Students will be invited to explore this theme and generate their best ideas in a case competition judged by healthcare and social care experts. The top-ranked team will be awarded a monetary prize of $3,000 and will have the opportunity to present at our conference in April. The team that is first runner-up will be awarded $2,000.

Participants

Students (9th-12th grade) of all backgrounds from the Butler County area are invited to participate. Each school can have one team with no more than three participants.

Topic – Social Determinants of Health

From the availability of safe parks to social support networks, a person’s surroundings significantly impact their health. For instance, a person living in a food desert with little education on nutrition may struggle to control their diabetes, even if prescribed medication.
Such non-medical, environmental factors that impact a person’s health are known as SDOH. Improving healthcare requires addressing SDOH as the root cause of health inequities.

However, the social care providers who tackle these issues are not compensated in the same way that medical providers are for supporting people’s health. Without proper funding for social care, the U.S. has struggled to make major improvements in health outcomes. In this competition, students will explore this topic, including the barriers to social care funding. They will also share their thoughts on how we might reimagine healthcare, so that social care is better integrated. Deliverables will include a write-up and live presentation followed by Q&A with industry experts.
